Getting your player ready...

Call it a career, Rod

Rod Smith needs to retire. The best wide receiver ever to wear a Broncos uniform helps no one by delaying the inevitable. Always known as a true team player, the unselfish act is to retire now so that Shanny can seriously figure out his receivers for 2008. Smith’s leadership and work ethic will prove valuable as a receivers coach for the Broncos or whatever fortunate team lands him for his next career in coaching.

Hot seat, hot sauce

If the sportswriters at The Denver Post don’t barbecue the Broncos’ Mike Shanahan for his choice of players and coaches, they should be demoted to paperboys.

If the Broncos played in New York or Philadelphia, the coaches and players would be taken to the woodshed for their performance this season.

Broncos fans have every right to complain when the team is beaten over and over because it lacks talent and, even worse, effort. Maybe Shanahan should stop the golf and go evaluate talent himself, instead of relying on the Mel Kiper-trained scouts he has been using. Then perhaps he could find another T.D. or another Randy Gradishar.

If the stands aren’t filled for the game against the Vikings, it won’t be because of the weather.
