Ben Altamirano, a Silver City, N.M., Democrat, served in the state Legislature during the terms of six governors, and the state’s current chief executive, Democrat Bill Richardson, will sorely miss the quiet effectiveness of the Senate’s top leader in the upcoming legislative session. Altamirano, right, who died Thursday, was an important ally for Richardson in the Senate, a legislative chamber that has grown more independent recently and resistant to the governor’s demands.
