GLENWOOD SPRINGS — Work has begun on an $890,000 whitewater park in the Colorado River west of Glenwood Springs for kayakers, rafters and river-runners.
Crews are preparing to divert the river to one side of its bed so they can install artificial boulders that will create a standing wave. Boaters will still be able to bypass the wave.
The water park is expected to be finished by March.
Jason Carey of Glenwood Springs-based , which designed the park, says construction has to be done in the winter when the water is low enough to be controlled.
Carey says hot springs that drain into the Colorado keep it from freezing hard, making it easier for builders to divert the flow.
