While carabiners may be considered essential gear for any serious rock climber, Petzl’s HERAbiner (MSRP: $13.95) can be a life-saving step in the treatment of ovarian cancer. Climbing gear manufacturer Petzl America launched a partnership with the HERA (Health, Empowerment, Research and Advocacy) Foundation earlier in 2007 to create the co- branded carabiner. Proceeds from sales of the item help fund HERA’s ovarian cancer awareness and prevention efforts. For every HERAbiner sold, Petzl is donating $1 to HERA. The limited-edition model of Petzl’s popular Attache Screw Lock model comes in the foundation’s signature turquoise blue and is engraved with “HERA Climb4Life.” The crag-side conversation-starting ‘biners also include a small information tag briefly explaining several key facts women should know about ovarian cancer. “The HERAbiner has the potential to touch the lives of a lot of people who may not have been thinking about ovarian cancer,” HERA founder and cancer survivor Sean Patrick said. “From the proceeds of sales helping the foundation, to casual conversations radiating awareness, one piece of climbing gear can make a difference.”
