MORRISON — Repairs have been completed on the Mother Cabrini Shrine’s 22-foot-high statue of the Sacred Heart of Jesus that was damaged by lightning in May.
The statue and the 373 steps leading up to it will remain closed until rewiring and concrete work around the base is finished.
“When the weather is better, we’ll have a reblessing and dedication ceremony,” said Sister Bernadette Casciano, administrator of the landmark on Lookout Mountain near Interstate 70.
Lightning broke off one of the limestone statue’s arms and a hand and damaged a foot and the base. The restoration, which will include installation of a lightning rod, is expected to cost more than $100,000.
Sister Bernadette said money for the repairs continues to come in but more is needed. Donations may be made to the Sacred Heart Statue Restoration Fund, 20189 Cabrini Blvd., Golden, CO 80401, or at mcs@mothercabrinishrine.org.
