Two men were killed last night after a speeding Lincoln Continental they were in smashed into a traffic light pole on South Kipling Street and burst into flames, authorities say.

The name of the driver has not been released because his family has not been notified, said Trooper Ryan Sullivan, spokesman for the Colorado State Patrol.

The passenger was identified as 21-year-old Steven Senterr of Lakewood.

Investigators believe that the driver was under the influence of alcohol or drugs at the time of the 10:03 p.m. accident, Sullivan said. Neither man was wearing a seat belt, he said.

The two were southbound on South Kipling Street just south of West Belleview Avenue when the silver car veered to the left and collided with a concrete median, spun, struck a tree on the right side of the road and then hit the traffic light pole at West Progress Avenue, Sullivan said.

The driver was pronounced dead at the scene and Senterr was taken to Swedish Medical Center where he was later pronounced dead, he said.

The intersection was closed for four hours during an investigation.
