An unarmed man killed by a Denver police officer in December after a foot chase was struck by six bullets, according to a coroner’s report.

Jason Gomez, 33, had bullet wounds in the chest, back, abdomen and right thigh, said Michelle Weiss-Samaras, chief deputy coroner. It was unclear which wounds were received first.

A toxicology report indicated Gomez had alcohol, cocaine and marijuana in his system at the time, she said.

The shooting happened Dec. 19 at about 2 a.m. near West Ada Place and South Hazel Court.

The officer, Timothy Campbell, who has been with the department since 2000, told investigators that the man threatened him and held a cigarette lighter in a way that suggested he was armed, said Sonny Jackson, Denver police spokesman.

Campbell has continued to work as a patrolman since the shooting, Jackson said.
