An ashtray full of discarded cigarettes dumped in a bedroom trash pail sparked a house fire today in Commerce City, fire officials said.
The fire started at about 11:15 a.m. at 6060 E. 74th Place, said Deputy Fire Marshal Kevin Vincel, of the South Adams County Fire Protection District.
No one was injured and firefighters stamped out the fire in about 10 minutes, Vincel said.
Firefighters rescued two pets — a dog and a snake — from the home.
Three adult residents of the home have been displaced by the fire, and the Red Cross is assisting them.
The home suffered heavy fire damage on the front side, and the back side suffered smoke and water damage.
