A Texas museum that teaches creationism is counting on the auction of a mastodon skull to stave off extinction. Joe Taylor, founder of Mt. Blanco Fossil Museum, said it will close unless the Volkswagen-sized skull finds a generous bidder.
Heritage Auction Galleries projects the skull, estimated to be 40,000 years old, will fetch upward of $160,000. The auction will be Sunday in Dallas, with bids accepted at until Saturday night.
Taylor said he has been financially crippled by a legal dispute over finder’s rights to an Allosaurus skeleton unearthed in Colorado.
