The Major League Lacrosse All-Star Game at Invesco Field at Mile High will be one of the highlights of the Denver Outlaws’ season, according to the 2008 league schedule released Thursday. The Outlaws open the season at home May 17 vs. the Los Angeles Riptide. The boys state high school championship game will precede the Outlaws-Riptide game.

The San Francisco Dragons will visit Denver on July 4. Last year, the Outlaws set a professional lacrosse attendance record when 19,793 turned out for the July 4 game and fireworks.

DU women’s lacrosse in favorite’s role

The University of Denver women’s lacrosse team has been tabbed as the favorite in a preseason vote of the coaches of the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation. DU received four of six first-place votes.

The Pioneers, who return 10 starters from last year’s regular-season MPSF champions, had 24 points in the voting. Stanford, which won the conference tournament last season, had 20 points, followed by Oregon (17), California (15), Cal Davis (9) and Saint Mary’s (5).

14ers shoot lights out

The Colorado 14ers went 2-0 at the NBA Development League Showcase in Boise, Idaho, beating the Tulsa 66ers 121-92 on Thursday. The 14ers shot 55 percent and had eight players in double figures. Kaniel Dickens led the way with 21 points and 10 rebounds. Elton Brown added 19 and 12.

Former CSU aide lands job

James Ward became the first member of Colorado State coach Sonny Lubick’s former football staff to land another position, taking over as Nevada’s cornerbacks coach.

Ward coached the Rams’ secondary for five seasons.
