
Turbulence diverts jet to Denver; 10 sent to hospitals
DENVER — United Airlines diverted a plane to Denver Monday morning after encountering turbulence that sent eight passengers and two flight attendants to hospitals.
“We’ll be conducting a complete investigation.,” United spokeswoman Megan McCarthy said.
Flight 1028 from Los Angeles to Chicago O’Hare, carrying 180 passengers and seven crew members, diverted to Denver at 2:55 a.m. Monday after encountering turbulence over Nevada.
United’s maintenance employees reviewed the Boeing 757, and “everything checked out OK,” McCarthy said.
After getting a new crew, the plane left to continue to Chicago at 5:44 a.m. Monday. It arrived in Chicago at 9:40 a.m.
ICE agent charged in data case now on unpaid leave
DENVER — A federal immigration agent charged with improperly accessing a criminal information database for Bob Beauprez’s gubernatorial campaign has been placed on unpaid leave, his legal-defense supporters said Monday.
Cory Voorhis, 39, had been on administrative leave with pay from Immigration and Customs Enforcement pending the outcome of his federal criminal case.
The Denver ICE office could not be reached for comment Monday.
Friday, Voorhis was notified by mail that he was losing his pay and benefits, said Mike Riebau, a spokesman for Voorhis’ legal-defense fund.
During the 2006 gubernatorial race, Beauprez used the information that Voorhis accessed about illegal immigrants in a series of ads questioning plea agreements made when Bill Ritter was Denver district attorney.
Springs police investigate robbery
COLORADO SPRINGS — Colorado Springs police are looking for three suspects accused of attacking a man during a home invasion and armed robbery.
A police report indicates three men rang the doorbell of the home about 2 a.m. Monday, and the man’s 15-year-old son answered the door.
Police say the trio attacked the man when he came to the door.
One suspect showed a gun and ordered everyone to get down on the floor.
The three then went through the home and took several items, including two video game systems.
Officers searched the neighborhood but were unable to locate the suspects.
Ex-Jeffco sheriff jailed on Springs warrant
DENVER — Former Jefferson County Sheriff Russ Cook was in Arapahoe County’s jail Monday after being arrested on a warrant for stalking in Colorado Springs, authorities said.
Cook resigned as sheriff in 2003.
He was being held until he could be transferred to El Paso County, the sheriff’s bureau chief, Phil Spence, said. Details of the warrant were not available.
Cook was arrested by the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office on an outstanding warrant for domestic violence involving stalking. He was being kept out of contact with other jail inmates.
