SAN DIEGO — San Diego Chargers quarterback Philip Rivers underwent surgery Wednesday to repair the torn anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee.

Rivers, hurt in a 28-24 victory over the Indianapolis Colts in the divisional playoffs, will rehab for up to six months.

• Charlie Joiner, San Diego’s career receiving leader, was hired to replace James Lofton as wide receivers coach. Lofton was fired Tuesday.
