GRAND JUNCTION, Colo.—A Western Slope man is being ordered to spend 222 years in prison for shooting at Mesa County sheriff’s deputies, and trying to kill an acquaintance in a desert near Grand Junction.

Twenty-six-year-old Samuel Lincoln learned his sentence Friday.

Lincoln fired shots at two deputies during a car chase in December 2005. A month earlier, he tried to kill 20-year-old James Finnegan.

Authorities said Lincoln and another man shot Finnegan several times in the face, leg, shoulder, wrist and side, but he survived.

A jury convicted Lincoln in that case last month.

Judge Thomas Deister denied a defense motion for a new trial.

Deister sentenced Lincoln to 144 years for shooting at the deputies, and 78 years for trying to kill Finnegan.
