GRAND JUNCTION, Colo.—Engineers at Grand Junction’s KREX-TV say they may know as early as Friday if the station’s transmitter will be salvageable after a weekend fire destroyed their building.

The blaze broke out Sunday morning in the decades-old building that housed the operations of CBS station KREX and Fox affiliate KFQX.

Engineers Phil Mowbry and Al Ladage began removing pieces of the transmitter from a bomb shelter under the building this week, and were encouraged by what they found. But they say they have to wait until the equipment dries out completely before they’ll try to power up the $130,000 transmitter that’s crucial to broadcasting.

It took employees three days to access the shelter because of debris from Sunday’s blaze.

Total damage is estimated at $6 million.
