DENVER—The Colorado Water Congress has given former state Agriculture Commissioner Don Ament its top award for his work to preserve water.
“Each one of you makes sacrifices. I’m humbled, grateful and thankful to all of you who devote your time,” Ament said Friday.
The Pueblo Chieftain said the water group gave Ament its Wayne Aspinall Water Leader of the Year. It is named after the Western Colorado Democrat who fought for decades in Congress to retain Colorado’s water rights.
Ament served as commissioner of agriculture for Owens for eight years after 12 years in the state Legislature, five years on the state Board of Education and 14 years on the Sterling school board.
