A yogi’s wisdom

You’ll find dozens of yoga tomes on bookstore shelves, but few can claim to be as authoritative as “Yoga: The Path to Holistic Health” (DK Publishing, $40) by celebrated yogi B.K.S. Iyengar. The first edition of the guide was published in 2001 and has been updated for Iyengar’s 90th birthday. The book shows classic yoga asanas, illustrated with step-by-step sequences, as well as information on Iyengar’s life and sections on strength, breathing and meditation.

Is Fido fit — or fat?

Gone are the days when going for a simple walk or playing fetch with your dog was the way for the two of you to stay in shape. Trainer Gunnar Peterson demonstrates some some pet workout ideas on videos at . It’s part of Hill’s Pet Nutritions campaign to get pet owners to help their dogs and cats slim down. The company is also sponsoring at PetFit Challenge search for American’s Fittest Pets. Five cat and five dog winners will be selected as finalists and flown to New York for judging and prizes. Seeing red

Beyond valentines and chocolate, February is the month to think about heart health. Friday is National Wear Red Day, and the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute is encouraging people to don red to raise awareness that heart disease is the No. 1 killer of women. In New York, celebrities will take to the runway for a show kicking off Fashion Week (Angela Bassett, below, modeled last year). Among the month’s local activities, the American Heart Association is coordinating a Go Red Casting Call from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Feb. 9 at the Outlets at Castle Rock. Five women will be chosen to be featured on a September show about heart health, according to Peggy Ziglin, public relations director for the outlets.
