Tripel Karmeliet Authentic Belgian Ale, $7.99 per 750ml bottle
From the Belgian town of Buggenhout comes a rewarding three-grain beer based on a 17th-century recipe originally brewed by Carmelite monks. When poured, Tripel Karmeliet delivers a robust carbonation and fruited scent. In the glass it displays a warm, golden hue and a mild cloudiness that dissipates as it settles. A strong, spiced flavor immediately hits your taste buds upon the first sip, blending wonderfully into a crisp fruitiness that remains vibrant, thanks in large part to the continued carbonation. The three grains — oats, barley and wheat — that solidify the brew cradle its lighter and more playful elements. Though not as apparent from the first sip as the spices and fruited tones, these grains slowly reveal themselves as the drink’s true highlights as you empty your glass. Despite its multiple flavors and seeming complexity, Tripel Karmeliet is a highly drinkable and praiseworthy beer. Alcohol 8 percent by volume.
