Oral commitments from high school players to Colorado State’s new football coaching staff began over the weekend with 6-foot-3, 191-pound wide receiver Byron Steele of Arlington (Texas) Lamar and cornerback and receiver Gerard Thomas (5-9, 165) of Kissimmee (Fla.) Osceola pledging to play for the Rams.

Lamar coach Eddie Peach said CSU started recruiting Steele two weeks ago — thanks to new staff member Tim Duffie, a former Texas-El Paso assistant.

Peach said CSU head coach Steve Fairchild coached another Lamar product, running back Fred Jackson, with the Buffalo Bills.

Steele earned all-district honors at cornerback but wasn’t in the recruiting database of or . Peach said Missouri and Southern Methodist also showed some interest in Steele.

Thomas’ only other offer was from Toledo, according to the recruiting services.

Eagles acquire Wichita goaltender.

The Colorado Eagles of the Central Hockey League traded for Wichita Thunder goalie Sebastien Laplante. The Eagles sent goalie Marco Emond and forward Mike Lukajic to Wichita. Laplante, a former Los Angeles Kings draft pick, won 52 of the 108 games he played for Wichita.
