DENVER—A Colorado lawmaker returned to work at the Capitol on Monday to a standing ovation and applause after serving 90 days of active duty in Iraq.

Rep. Joe Rice, D-Littleton, an Army reservist, said security in Iraq has improved since he did a tour of duty several years ago, his fourth since he joined the military 23 years ago.

Rice said he is glad to be back representing his constituents. He said the Internet allowed him to keep in touch.

“Thanks to e-mail, during my free time I was able to stay in close contact with my colleagues and the people who elected me to represent them. Because of that, I feel I did not miss much while I was away,” he said.
