Relentless snow in the mountains could spill onto the Eastern Plains and Denver today in the form of snow showers.
A snow and blowing snow advisory for parts of the Northern and Central Mountains posted by the National Weather Service remains in effect until 5 p.m. today.
Snow fell in the mountains overnight, with 1 to 4 inches reported. The hardest-hit areas were along the Wyoming border and around Cameron and Rabbit Ears Passes, the weather service said.
Another 5 to 10 inches are expected today in the high country and winds up to 40 mph at higher elevations will create deep drifts and hamper travel, especially over mountain passes. Visibilities will be reduced to a 1/4 mile or less at times, the weather service reports.
Storm totals today of 4 to 8 inches are forecast for North and Middle Parks with and about 2 inches in South Park and along the Front Range Foothills.
On the Eastern Plains snow showers should start this afternoon and last through the evening, but likely bring less than 2 inches accumulation, the weather service said.
On and off snow will continue in the mountains through early next week as strong winds laden with moisture continue to stream over Colorado.
The heaviest mountain snows are forecast for Monday into Tuesday and will bring another chance of snow for Denver and the plains.
Today in Denver scattered snow showers should kick in after 11 a.m. and the high temperature will be about 34 degrees. Accumulation in Denver should be less than half and inch, the weather service said.
Tomorrow in Denver should be sunny with a high of 35 degrees, the weather service reports, and weekend high temperatures in Denver should climb into the 40s under partly sunny skies.
