Getting your player ready...

Can you offer a few tips for making the most of professional design services?

When you begin working with a designer, it is helpful to keep a folder of clippings from newspapers and magazines of rooms, items or colors that appeal to you. This is a great way to introduce your style and ideas.

Also, it’s just as important to tell your designer what you don’t like as what you do like. Hate brown? Never want to see plaid again? Little things like that can help your designer begin to gather ideas and items for you.

Finally, don’t fall into the trap of needing something immediately. Give yourself time to order just the right piece. That way, you don’t end up frantically trying to find “off the floor” pieces and feeling like you settled for something because what you really wanted wasn’t available. — Timothy Stillwell and Randy Jensen, 44 Park Design, Denver (44parkdesign.com, 303-995-0652)
