President Bush arrived at Buckley Air Force Base in Aurora today to attend a fundraising event for GOP Senate candidate Bob Schaffer at the home of supporters in an exclusive Cherry Hills subdivision.

He met Jeanne Assam, the security guard who stopped a gunman’s rampage at New Life Church in December, and New Life Pastor Brady Boyd on the airstrip near Air Force One.

Bush also presented the President’s Volunteer Service Award to Cherie Yager, an optician who volunteers at the Stout Street Eye Clinic.

As his motorcade barreled down an empty C-470, police blocked traffic that backed up at entrance and exit ramps.

Students in front of Liberty Middle School waved, and at St. Mary’s Academy, members of a smaller group jumped and waved at the motorcade.

After the fundraiser, the president returned to Buckley Air Force Base and his plane left about 6:15 p.m.
