DENVER—The number of passengers who passed through Denver International Airport rose 5.4 percent last year to nearly 50 million, a record.

Airport officials say the previous record was 47.3 million passengers in 2006.

DIA manager Turner West said Thursday the airport, which opened in 1995, was built to handle about 50 million people a year.

West says the airport will update its master plan as it considers what kind of construction and improvements are needed to accommodate further growth.
