MANKATO, Minn. — Minnesota State completed a two-game sweep of the Denver Pioneers on Saturday night with a 3-2 victory.
The Mavericks recorded their first sweep over DU since 2001 and improved to 13-10-4 overall and 6-9-4 in the WCHA, while the Pioneers fell to 18-8, 12-6.
Minnesota State won Friday night’s game 5-1.
Andrew Sackrison, Joel Hanson and Jon Kalinski scored for Minnesota State, which stretched its winning streak to four games. Mike Zacharias gained the win in goal with 18 saves.
Freshmen Tyler Bozak and Kyle Ostrow scored for DU, while Peter Mannino stopped 19 shots in his third consecutive loss.
“We played with better intensity and effort tonight, but give Minnesota State credit for its play this weekend,” DU head coach George Gwozdecky said. “We battled back a couple of times, but couldn’t score the game-tying goal.”
Minnesota State held a 2-0 lead on goals by Sackrison and Hanson before Bozak put the Pioneers on the board at 6:19 of the second period. Kalinski regained the two-goal lead for Minnesota State at 15:50.
Ostrow scored DU’s final goal on the power play at 13:46 with assists going to J.P. Testwuide and Mannino.
Denver returns to action at home Feb. 8-9 against Minnesota.
Air Force 3, Bentley 1
AIR FORCE ACADEMY — Air Force moved into a tie for second place in the Atlantic Hockey Association with a 3-1 victory over Bentley.
Air Force improved to 13-10-5 overall and 10-8-4 in the AHA. Bentley fell to 6-14-6, 6-8-6. Air Force and Army are tied with 24 points, two points behind RIT.
Jeff Hajner, Matt Fairchild and Brent Olson scored goals for the Falcons. Paul Scalici scored Bentley’s only goal.
Air Force is on the road Friday and Saturday with a two-game series at Mercyhurst in Erie, Pa.
