NAME: Frederick Ellis
AGE: 71
OCCUPATION: Retired entrepreneur
HOMETOWN: Denver
POLITICAL AFFILIATION: Democrat POLITICAL BACKGROUND: Ellis said he has never participated in a caucus, but he has participated in primaries in New Hampshire, California and Illinois. The Army veteran has been a Democrat since the 1960s, when he protested against the Vietnam War outside the Pentagon in 1967. He was involved in Democratic presidential nominee George McGovern’s 1972 run for the White House as well, Ellis said.
ON HIS MIND: After John Edwards exited this year’s race, Ellis said he switched his support to Barack Obama. But if Ellis had his way, he said, he could support both candidates on the same ballot. Ellis said he strongly supports instant-runoff voting, which allows voters to rank candidates in order of preference. The whittling down of candidates doesn’t leave room to gain representation, Ellis said. He has attended meetings at the state capitol to extend voter choice.
RATE YOUR POLITICAL TEMPERATURE: Red hot
FINISH THIS SENTENCE: One thing I would change about presidential politics is . . . “shortening the length of the campaign, use instant run-off voting and a popular vote not the Electoral College.”
To participate in the Colorado caucuses, you must have been a registered Democrat or Republican by Dec. 5. For information, go to for Democrats or for Republicans.
