FORT MORGAN — A natural-gas company has been fined a record $374,000 for a gas leak that forced at least a dozen families out of their homes for a week, damaged property and contaminated drinking-water wells.

State regulators determined that Colorado Interstate Gas Co. violated state rules, causing a leak at a well in its underground gas storage in October 2006 in the Fort Morgan area.

“The incident involved a significant risk to public safety,” the Colorado Oil and Gas Conservation Commission said in its Jan. 15 order.
