Getting your player ready...

The Rapids have a news conference today at noon, when it is expected they will announce the addition of three-time all-star Christian Gomez of D.C. United.

The Washington Post reported Thursday the midfielder from Argentina will join the Rapids in exchange for a first- round draft pick and money. Reached Thursday night, Rapids vice president Jeff Plush would not confirm or deny the validity of the report but did confirm today’s news conference.

Rapids coach Fernando Clavijo said Thursday that Gomez was on a short list of players he wanted.

“Any time you would get a chance to get a player of his experience and ability, you would certainly jump,” Clavijo said.

Gomez, 33, was the league’s MVP in 2006 and in three seasons has 39 goals and 29 assists in 97 games.

According to The Post’s report, the Rapids will pay him close to $400,000 with two guaranteed seasons, plus incentives and bonuses. He made $218,500 last season with United.

Schedule set

The Rapids released their 2008 schedule Thursday, and the team will open March 29 at home against the Los Angeles Galaxy and David Beckham.

The 30-game schedule ends Oct. 25 against Real Salt Lake, and the MLS championship game is Nov. 23.
