DILI, East Timor — East Timor declared a state of emergency today after attacks on the country’s top leaders in a failed coup.
Surgeons operated for three hours on President Jose Ramos-Horta, who had been shot, and he remained in serious but stable condition, hospital officials said. Prime Minister Xanana Gusmao escaped a separate attack unhurt.
The country’s top fugitive, rebel leader Alfredo Reinado, and one of his men were killed in the assassination attempt on the president. One of the president’s guards also died.
Acting President Vicente Gutterres announced the two- day emergency, which lets authorities ban demonstrations and gives police extended powers of search and arrest.
