It’s good news for bluegrass aficionados — and fans of AAA radio.
Glen Hansard and Marketa Irglova will play this spring’s Telluride Bluegrass Festival, the festival announced Wednesday. Hansard and Irglova are best known as the stars of the 2007 film “Once,” and they’ll perform under the name the Swell Season on June 22.
Hansard’s lesser known band, Irish rockers the Frames, will also play the festival, on June 21.
Other recent additions include Del McCoury, Leftover Salmon, Tift Merritt, Solomon Burke and Paolo Nutini, who is, according to festival organizers, quite the bluegrass fan.
The festival will announce more names in the months to come, but the above musicians join already announced acts such as the Sam Bush Band, Ricky Skaggs and Bruce Hornsby with Kentucky Thunder, the Ani DiFranco Band, Yonder Mountain String Band, Bela Fleck, Tim O’Brien, Punch Brothers featuring Chris Thile, Uncle Earl, the Emmitt Nershi Band and many others.
The biggest bluegrass-related tour of the summer — featuring Alison Krauss and Robert Plant — won’t likely play the Telluride festival. They play the Bonnaroo Music Festival the weekend before Telluride, and it’s rumored the two will headline their own Red Rocks date in support of the Grammy-winning record “Raising Sand.”
