Brian Irvin of Mesa, Ariz., was racing a friend down the intermediate Marmot run when he lost balance and sailed out of a stand of trees around noon, according to San Miguel County authorities.

Irvin was not wearing a helmet and died on the mountain from his head injuries, coroner Bob Dempsey said.

Dempsey said Irvin leaves behind a 1-year-old child. Irvin’s wife, Amy, is five weeks pregnant. Dempsey said.
