A 33-year-old Southwest Airlines pilot hit the trees and died at Telluride Ski Resort on Wednesday.
Brian Irvin of Mesa, Ariz., was racing a friend down the intermediate Marmot run when he lost his balance and sailed out of a stand of trees about noon, according to San Miguel County authorities.
Irvin was not wearing a helmet and died on the mountain from his head injuries, coroner Bob Dempsey said.
“If he had been wearing a helmet, he would be alive today,” Dempsey said Wednesday evening.
Dempsey said Irvin is survived by a 1-year-old child. Irvin’s wife, Amy, is five weeks pregnant, Dempsey said.
