A 68-year-old skier was found face down in the snow this afternoon at Winter Park Resort, and died a short time later, according to the resort and Winter Park police.

The exact cause of death had not yet been determined, but Police Chief Glen Trainor said the man did not appear to have hit anything.

“There were no signs of trauma, so we can rule that out,” Trainor said.

The man’s name was withheld until next of kin could be contacted, the chief said.

The man was found alive at about 1:55 p.m. on the Cranmer ski trail. He was taken to the Seven Mile Clinic at the base of ski mountain and died at 2:30 p.m. at the clinic.

“While very rare, this is a very sad incident and our deepest condolences go out the friends and family of the skier,” Winter Park resort spokeswoman Darcy Morse said in a statement.
