Former Denver City Councilman Edward F. Burke Jr. died Tuesday. He was 72.
Burke was on the council from 1967 to 1983 and was City Council president from 1976 to 1977.
Burke helped guide the development of McNichols Sports Arena, numerous tennis facilities, bicycle routes and the Washington Park Recreation Center. Burke also managed the institution of the city’s cable-television franchise.
More recently, Burke was honored by Police Chief Gerry Whitman for his efforts to thwart a suicide attempt at the Denver COP Shop in south Denver, where he was a regular volunteer for four years.
A rosary will be Monday at 7 p.m. and a Mass of Christian Burial will be Tuesday at 10:30 a.m. Both services will be at St. Francis DeSales Church, 301 S. Sherman St.
