The recent news about coach Bobby Knight quitting midseason from Texas Tech is just more about the control this man has demonstrated throughout his career. Many refer to his “anger,” but not the cause of his anger. He lost control of his anger, when he “lost control.” This was not just on the court with referees and players, but off the court in practice, in his daily life, including students who might have said “Hey Knight!” His outbursts are legendary, but so is his win record, which we all know gives him a license to misbehave.
Knight is a textbook example of what’s wrong with our sports media. Winning seasons and NCAA Final Four trips are what define great coaches, rather than their professionalism or their conduct.
