The Rapids won their first preseason game, 3-0 over Marathon of Honduras on Saturday in Sunrise, Fla. The Rapids played to a 0-0 draw against Florida Atlantic University on Friday.
The Rapids scored on two own goals on crosses by Colin Clark that bounced off Marathon defenders.
DU men’s lacrosse opens with win.
The No. 20 University of Denver men’s lacrosse team opened its season with a 15-5 victory over visiting No. 16 Colgate.
Junior Cliff Smith (five) and freshman Jamie Lincoln (four) combined to score nine goals, and six DU players had multipoint games.
Area tracksters shine at Simplot Games.
Colorado Flyers hurdler Michael Hancock, a senior at George Washington High School, set a meet record in the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 7.78 seconds at the Simplot Games in Pocatello, Idaho.
The Simplot Games is a premier high school indoor track and field event that drew 2,000 athletes from across the nation.
AJ Whitaker (senior), Quinton Dodson (senior), Tyrone Stevenson (senior) and Kiel Pickett (sophomore) of the D.A.T.A.C. track club of Denver won the boys 800-meter relay with a time of 1:30.61. Mason Finely, of Salida High School, won the shot put. Joseph Morris, a Golden senior, won the 60-meter dash. Wes Rickman, a junior from Falcon, won the 3,200 meters.
Charles White, a Cherry Creek senior, finished second in the 800 meters.
Ritzenhein wins XC championship.
Former University of Colorado standout Dathan Ritzenhein won the USA Cross Country Championship in San Diego.
Ritzenhein, a 2004 Olympian in the 10,000 meters and runner-up in the 2008 U.S. Olympic marathon trials, won the 12-kilometer race in 35 minutes, 3 seconds — 26 seconds ahead of former Buff great Jorge Torres. Also qualifying for the world championships in Scotland in March were Boulder’s Edwardo Torres of Boulder, Jorge’s twin brother, and James Carney.
Former CU runner Renee Metivier was second in the women’s race to Shalene Flanagan. Kevin Williams of D’Evelyn High School was fifth in the junior boys 8K race.
