TUCSON — This is going to take some getting used to.
The Rockies’ new status as legitimate playoff contenders, that is. And make no doubt, they are legit.
How legit?
As we speak, the Rox are Our Town’s best bet to win a championship. No? Then you must think the Broncos, Avs or Nuggets are on the verge of a parade down 17th Street. (Memo to wild-eyed dreamers near and far: Isn’t gonna happen.)
Truth is, the Rockies made it to the World Series last season, and there are reasons to think they can make the playoffs again. Sure, there are reasons to think they won’t, too, most notably the absence of Kaz Matsui from their lineup. But they have several young players who could be better this season than they were last year.
Win or lose, though, the Rockies have recaptured the buzz they created in the ’90s and lost in the early years of the 21st century. It wasn’t all a mirage last September and October. This is officially a compelling team to watch.
