MALIBU, Calif. — Tom Asbury is coming out of retirement to coach Pepperdine’s basketball team for a second time beginning next season.
Asbury, who earned varsity letters in basketball, football and track at George Washington High School in the 1960s before attending the University of Wyoming, had a 125-59 record with the Waves in six seasons from 1988-94. Asbury, 62, also coached at Kansas State from 1994-2000.
Eric Bridgeland, who was named interim coach after Vance Walberg resigned Jan. 18, will keep that job for the rest of the season.
• Dickey Nutt resigned after 13 seasons as Arkansas State’s coach and will step down immediately. He was two wins short of matching John Rauth’s school record of 191. Assistants Al Grushkin and Shawn Forrest will take over as co-interim head coaches.
Nolan Richardson, who has been out of college coaching since being fired by Arkansas in 2002, is a possible replacement.
“I might entertain the idea,” Richardson said. “Never say never.”
