TUCSON — During the Rockies’ magical run to the World Series last fall, Clint Hurdle became America’s favorite bubble boy.
During games, the manager chews six pieces of gum, all at once. His constant chomping, mixed in with the occasional bubble, caught the fancy of a lot of baseball fans who watched him jawing on TV.
“I have got more bubble gum this offseason than you can even imagine,” Hurdle said Tuesday. “They mail it, they FedEx it. It shows up at my house.”
Hurdle guesses he’s received more than 50 pounds of bubble gum, which he then gave away. During a charity breakfast this winter, a local restaurant presented Hurdle with a gift-wrapped box of the stuff.
“There is always something you want to be known for, you’ve got to have a legacy,” Hurdle said. “Mine’s chewing gum.”
