ISTANBUL, Turkey — Thousands gathered Wednesday in Yerevan, the capital of Armenia, to protest Tuesday’s presidential election, which they said had been rigged, although international observers evaluated it as relatively free and fair.
On Wednesday, election officials declared Serge Sarkisian, the current prime minister, the winner, with 53 percent of the vote. The presidential election — the fifth since Armenia won independence from the Soviet Union in 1991 — pitted Sarkisian against Levon Ter-Petrosian, Armenia’s first president after the Soviet Union’s fall.
The protests have so far not turned violent but have cast a shadow over democracy in Armenia, a tiny, landlocked country bordering Turkey and Iran.
