DENVER—Roosevelt claimed the lead after the preliminary round Thursday at the 73rd annual Class 3A state high school wrestling tournament.

The Roughriders, who finished second last year, scored 37 points and advanced 11 of their 13 wrestlers to the quarterfinals.

Gunnison was in second place with 24 points, Centauri was close behind with 23, Florence had 22 1/2 and Olathe was in fifth with 19.

There were no major upsets in the Class 3A preliminaries as all seven returning state champions advanced, including Centauri’s Mitchell Polkowske, who is attempting to finish his high school career with back-to-back unbeaten seasons. Polkowske (39-0), the 135-pound winner last year, routed Yuma junior Seth Brown 24-9 at 145 pounds in the preliminaries.

Two other wrestlers also remain undefeated in 3A.

Ethan Martinez of St. Mary’s improved to 33-0 by pinning Tyler Hanson of Hotchkiss in 3:21 at 125 pounds.

Florence sophomore Matt Addington, also 33-0, earned a major decision, 16-3, over Platte Valley senior Trevor Shockley at 140 pounds.

The Class 3A championship quarterfinal round will begin at 10 a.m. Friday.
