Matt Addington doesn’t really know where his wrestling style comes from. Perhaps he forgot.
Kind of like when the Florence sophomore showed up to a tournament earlier this season without his shoes and had to borrow a pair from his coach. He liked the “old school” shoes so much he still uses them, although he might not be in charge of bringing them.
“Yeah, I usually forget something every time,” Addington said with a grin. “I’m pretty forgetful.”
He’s also forgotten how to lose this season, despite an unorthodox style.
Addington scored a 16-3 major decision over Platte Valley senior Trevor Shockley to improve to 33-0 Thursday in the opening round of the Class 3A state tournament at the Pepsi Center.
Long and lanky, the 140-pounder “doesn’t care who he wrestles, he’s just ready to go,” coach Bob Masse said.
Not bad considering Addington had surgery this season to remove meniscus from his left knee. Now it matches his right knee, which he tore up at the regional tournament last season.
“My brother is kind of an out-there kid,” said Andrew Addington, a 130-pound senior.
The Addington brothers have been wrestling for Masse since Andrew was 6. Andrew, who is 30-8 this season a year after placing sixth in the 125 class, lost his opening match Thursday via a 6-2 decision to Lamar’s Brendon Downing.
“The way everyone else sees it is, ‘Oh, your little brother is showing you up,’ ” Andrew said. “I love having my little brother on the team. It’s fun to have someone there that when you go home they know what you went through in practice.”
Practice has been a great place for the brothers to get out their aggression and help each other improve. Matt has enjoyed gaining enough weight to surpass his older brother and is proud he can “beat him up” in the wrestling room. Their styles, however, couldn’t be more different.
“He’s the most unorthodox wrestler you’ve ever seen,” Andrew said of his younger brother. “You can’t practice for what he has.”
The two returning champions at 119 advanced as St. Mary’s Gabrian Martinez and La Junta’s Ross Leyba won via technical falls. Each of 3A’s seven returning champs moved along without much fanfare.
Mitchell Polkowske (39-0) of Centauri scored 10 takedowns against Yuma’s Seth Brown to win 24-9 at 145 pounds.
“Sonny Yohn (formally of Alamosa) has the takedown record of 336 and I need about 10 more right now to beat it,” Polkowske said.
