A Catholic school in Arvada was temporarily evacuated today as a precautionary measure after two teachers and several students complained of headaches and nausea.
The Arvada Fire Department responded about 10:35 a.m. to Shrine of St. Anne School, 7230 Grant Place, and checked the building for toxic vapors or air contaminants but found nothing, said Scott Pribble, a fire department spokesman.
Students were evacuated across the street, to St. Anne’s Catholic Church, until the fire department gave the all-clear.
Firefighters and paramedics looked over students at the scene. At one point, up to 40 complained about feeling ill but most recovered, and classes resumed about an hour later.
About 10 students went home with parents who were contacted about the situation.
“The flu had been making the rounds, and some of the kids did look a bit peaked,” said Principal Kathie Kuehl. “But we are all safe, and we are back to a normal day.”
St. Anne’s, near Wadsworth Bypass and Ralston Road, serves students in grades kindergarten through eight and has about 410 students.
