SAN JOSE, Calif. — Google signed an agreement with the Cleveland Clinic to test technology that may give patients more control over their medical records.

The clinic will use Google’s search technology to help patients safely access data on medical conditions, prescriptions and allergies, the clinic said Thursday in a statement. As many as 10,000 patients will participate in the pilot program.

The effort is designed to allow patients to manage their records better and control who sees information about them. Google also is developing technology that will allow users to pinpoint data on the Web that relates to their conditions, according to the company’s blog.

The project “eliminates errors that occur simply because we didn’t have the information,” C. Martin Harris, the clinic’s chief information officer, said by phone Thursday. “We can know that when we’re caring for patients, we have the right information to make the best possible medical decision.”

The trial is expected to run six to eight weeks.
