GRAND JUNCTION — The Cabaret Dinner Theater reopened Monday after being shuttered for five days, marketing director Lee Borden said, though he still described the situation as “dire.”
The playhouse, which employs 100 people and is the sixth-largest theater in the state, had been seized by the Colorado Department of Revenue on Thursday for nonpayment of $13,000 in back taxes.
Borden said the money was raised through individual donations ranging from $5 to $1,000 each, remarkable given the Cabaret is a for-profit business. But Borden says much more will be needed to keep the theater running.
The Cabaret lost more than $25,000 in revenues during the forced closure and is still carrying a significant debt load.
