About 1,200 students in and around Leadville have the day off from school because of a gas leak.
The leak is at the Lake County R-1 school district’s bus barn, at 107 Spruce St., and bus drivers couldn’t start their buses this morning for fear of sparking an explosion or fire, said Betty Bullock, the district’s superintendent.
The leak and subsequent lack of student transportation shut down all four schools — Lake County High School, Lake County Middle School, West Park Elementary School and Margaret J. Pitt Elementary School — in the mostly rural district.
The district uses about a dozen buses to transport students.
“Hopefully we’ll have it all repaired by tomorrow,” Bullock said.
Bullock didn’t know what caused the leak. Xcel employees are working to repair the gas line, Bullock said.
