DENVER—Three Colorado residents are hurt, but alive, after their plane crashed into a tree near a landing strip in Florida.
The single-engine Cessna 177B went down Wednesday near the Quincy-Gadsen Airport.
The pilot, 68-year-old William Hix of Walsenburg, says he was running low on fuel, and the engine started sputtering as he approached the landing strip.
The crash left the plane 40 feet above the ground. Hix crawled out of the cockpit and stepped onto a branch, but the branch gave way and Hix tumbled to the ground.
He suffered a broken wrist and a broken knee. Firefighters rescued his 68-year-old wife, Sally, and a friend, 50-year-old Joe Piper, who suffered only minor injuries.
Hix had planned to refuel in Tallahassee, but found no fuel available.
