Denver Post journalists took home 24 first-place awards this weekend, including the Editorial Sweepstakes Award for the Colorado Press Association, as the state’s two largest journalism contests announced their winners.

In the Colorado Associated Press awards announced Friday, The Post won the award for general excellence, with Post reporters winning eight first-place certificates for newswriting and online work and the paper’s photo staff and graphic artists taking home additional first-place honors.

Post journalists won another 14 first-place awards from the Colorado Press Association, including the Public Service award for “Foreclosing on the American Dream,” a series on the nation’s mortgage crisis.

Rocky Mountain News journalists won 12 first-place awards from the Colorado Press Association. In the Colorado AP awards, the Rocky won 15 top awards, including seven for writing and another eight in photography.

The Colorado Press Association also honored Frank Dixon, longtime production manager for The Denver Post and the Denver Newspaper Agency, as Newspaper Person of the Year. Dixon retired as senior vice-president of operations for the DNA in September 2007. He started at The Post as a flyboy in the pressroom in 1962.

Also honored as Newspaper Person of the Year was Dale Carr of The Longmont Daily Times-Call. Carr is vice president of production for Lehman Communication Corp. in Longmont.
