A federal report released Friday says a proposal by Colorado Springs Utilities to build a 43-mile-long pipeline from the Pueblo Reservoir along Interstate 25 to Colorado Springs is the “preferred alternative.”
The Bureau of Reclamation found each of the seven proposals submitted by Colorado Springs to deliver water to be reasonable.
Colorado Springs wants to build a $1 billion pipeline to supply water for the next 40 years. The project is subject to approval by the Pueblo County Board of Commissioners. Under land-use permitting, Pueblo could regulate the path of the pipeline through the county.
The release Friday of a draft environmental impact statement signals the beginning of a 60-day public-comment period. The bureau will take comments and consider whether to modify the impact statement based on public input. A final EIS could be issued late this year. A record of action is expected by early 2009.
