A standoff that started early this morning in Aspen ended following more than nine hours of negotiations.
Sgt. Bill Linn of the Aspen Police Department said police received a noise complaint from the Alpina Haus apartment complex about 12:38 a.m. this morning.
When officers contacted a man at the complex, he refused them entry. Moments later, said Linn, officers heard what they thought was a gunshot in the apartment.
At that point the officers retreated, a perimeter was set up and all available officers reported to the scene.
He said negotiators from the police department were able to contact the subject by phone and continued to talk to him.
He said that around 10 a.m. a female negotiator from the Gilpin County Sheriff’s Department took over and within minutes the man walked out the front door and surrendered without any further incident.
The man, whose name is not being released, was in custody by 10:15 a.m., said Linn.
Linn said the man has had other encounters with Aspen officers.
“We are familiar with him in the law enforcement community,” Linn said.
No weapon has been recovered.
