COMMERCE CITY — Workers at a sewage treatment plant in Commerce City found a “small fetus” in a filter screen Sunday, police said Monday.

The Adams County coroner’s office has not yet determined how far along the fetus was or whether it was viable outside the womb, said Officer Lanissa Blevins, a spokeswoman for Commerce City police.

Blevins said police think they have identified the mother but have not yet found her.

Steve Frank, spokesman for Metro Wastewater Reclamation District, said this is not the first time the plant has made such a discovery.

“It’s not common, but it happens often enough that it’s not uncommon,” he said.
